Fire Truck lights

MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — Three adults and five children have been displaced after a home caught fire in Mattoon Friday morning.

The Mattoon Fire Department responded to a two-story home in the 2600 block of Champaign Avenue just before 11 a.m.

According to firefighters, smoke was coming from the back door of the home and there was a person spraying water from a garden hose into the kitchen from the porch.

Crews said the fire was under control within 10 minutes of arrival and all the residents got out safe before they arrived.

The fire department said there was extensive damage to the kitchen area around the stove, and the home is uninhabitable because the utilities had to be shut off until repairs are made.

The fire is still under investigation, but the department said it appears to be accidental.
