CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Champaign leaders are working to ease restrictions for construction developers who have expressed frustration over parking requirements. The city is considering eliminating the minimum parking space rules for new apartments and houses.

The council hopes that this ordinance change will encourage the development of more affordable housing options, such as duplexes and townhomes. A formal vote on the proposed change is expected in the coming weeks.

During a recent meeting, a public commenter stated, "It does not force you to do anything with your property that you don't want to do. You don't have to get rid of parking, and you don't have to turn your single-family home into a duplex if you don't want to. It's about the flexibility that it gives all of our neighbors."

A formal vote on the change is anticipated in the near future.
