URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — DeShawn Williams was officially sworn in as the mayor of Urbana on Saturday. He is the first black mayor in the city's history.

This comes after Urbana's previous mayor, Diane Wolfe Marlin, decided against running for re-election after serving two terms.

Williams beat out candidate Annie Adams during the elections in February. He started his career as a bank teller, and worked up to becoming the Chief Deputy Treasurer of Champaign County.

Williams will officially take office on Monday, May 5 after Urbana's city council meeting.
