DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Kavari Drisdell's mother, Denise Boyd, says she is still seeking justice for her son even though a DUI-death charge was dropped.

The case against Hassan Woods, who was accused of killing Kavari while driving under the influence, was dismissed Wednesday.

Macon County State's Attorney Diane Couri said in a news release that video footage, witness statements and reconstruction of the June 15 crash didn't support claims that Hassan Woods' intoxication caused Kavari Drisdell's death.

"This case is especially heartbreaking because it involves the death of a child," Couri said in a statement. "In all cases, the Macon County State's Attorney's Office can only do what the law allows."

Boyd said that she and her family felt betrayed by the result and that Kavari's family is not getting the justice they waited for.

"Something should have happened with the man [Woods]. Because ain't no way he just got away free like this," Boyd said.

She says now, justice looks different for them. She is calling for reform, such as the installation of speed bumps, the enforcement of speed limits and more frequent stop signs in residential areas with families.

"Justice needs to get served. I don't want ... another parent to have to go through what I'm going through right now," Boyd said.

For now, her family is spreading stories and memories of Kavari, keeping his legacy alive.

"I want him to be remembered for the person, the loving and caring and smart kid that he was, that loved to play basketball, who loved to come outside and hang out with his friends. The person that loved to go to school and get good grades to make his parents happy," Boyd said.

WAND News reached out to the Macon County State's Attorney for additional comment, but have not heard back.
