DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Do it yourself fireworks shows resulted in thousands of injuries in 2024 according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

CPSC is urging the public to prioritize fireworks safety after an estimated 14,700 people were injured last year. Eleven of those injuries resulted in death. Burns were the most common injury, making up 37% of all emergency room visits. Injuries were up by 52% when compared to 2023.

Kids were not the biggest culprit when it comes to injuries involving fireworks. Adults ages 25 to 44 accounted for the largest share of reported injuries (32%), followed by people ages 15 to 24 (24%).

While parents often think sparklers are safe the CPSC says sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees. In 2024, there were an estimated 1,700 emergency room treated injuries involving sparklers.
