DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Illinois is number one this year in a category no one wants to be at the top of.

So far, through May 11, the state has reported 109 tornadoes, and we're not into the summer months just yet.

According to the National Weather Service, Mississippi came in second with 76 tornadoes, followed by Oklahoma (39) and Missouri (38).

A study by Insurify Illinois has found that the state experienced nearly $245 million in tornado damage over the past decade. In 2025 alone, over $30 million in damage was reported in Illinois.

The storms have caused high insurance premiums, which have risen by 48% since 2023.
