DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Macon County Abatement District hosted their 4th annual tire-drop off Thursday.

The goal of the event is to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the standing water and becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Macon County Mosquito Abatement District Director Jason Probus describes ways that people can help prevent the spread of these insects.

"Residents that have swimming pools that are no longer in use, rain barrels, trash cans, buckets," Probus said. "Anything that can hold water can breed mosquitos, so we have to be vigilant and do our own part in our own neighborhoods to rid those sources so that we can have fewer mosquitos."
