nokomis school damage

NOKOMIS, Ill. (WAND) — Nokomis schools closed on Monday after a possible tornado caused damage to the junior high school gymnasium.

The Nokomis Area Fire Protection District said several pieces of the steel roof had blown off the east side of the junior high gym. Other damage was found near the high school.

Parts of the metal roof were twisted up in trees and around fences near the school, according to the Montgomery County EMA.

Storm damage was also reported in Witt, Coffeen, and Raymond.

The EMA office reported trees taking out power lines due to high winds. Power has since been restored throughout most of the county.

Power outages were in the thousands across Central Illinois on Sunday evening, but most have been restored.

The National Weather Service said Monday morning it found likely tornado damage in Montgomery County. NWS was still compiling data before releasing any additional information.

Other storm surveys were continuing across Central Illinois on Monday after severe storms Sunday evening prompted several tornado warnings across multiple counties.

There have been no reports of serious injuries.
