DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Decatur police issued a statement after a false alarm caused panic at the Decatur Civic Center Tuesday evening.

The Decatur Police Department stated that an internal alert system at the center's offices alerted officers to a potential active shooter situation.

Several officers arrived on the scene, and DPD eventually determined it was a false alarm after securing the area.

Decatur police found there was no real threat, and the building and area were deemed safe.

A couple WAND News viewers expressed their frustrations with the panic caused by the false alarm and how it impacted young kids on site at the time.

Police are working to figure out what caused the false alarm.
