Rock Springs prescribed burns

Prescribed burns are planned throughout the Rock Springs Conservation Area Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Prescribed burns are planned throughout the Rock Springs Conservation Area Wednesday.

The Macon County Conservation District (MCCD) said crews will conduct prescribed burns at various points on the property.

According to MCCD, prescribed fire is one of the most efficient tools to manage natural areas. The areas that are being burned will be closed during the burn, but will reopen once crews are finished.

MCCD said anyone who sees a freshly burned area is encouraged to come back and see how quickly the native plants begin to grow back.

The Rock Springs Conservation Area is an over 400 acre conservation area southwest of Decatur. It features over nine miles of hiking trails, a bike trail, and a nature center.
