CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - United Way of Champaign County announced that it has raised $1 million through its Power of the Purse program.Â
The organization held its 12th annual event on Thursday, raising over $127,000 to reach the milestone since the program's inception.Â
Proceeds from this year's Power of the Purse will go towards local literacy grants for students through third grade.Â
Women United literacy grants will also be open for Champaign County-based nonprofits and education-focused programs. Those interested in applying must submit an application by June 1.Â
According to the United Way of Champaign County's website, Power of the Purse is a Women United celebration that raises funds to support local women and families.
