URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - The Urbana City Council narrowly approved an ordinance Monday night for a proposed apartment project.

The project is a proposed multifamily development on the corner of West Main and North McCullough Streets.

The property is now in a flood plain near Boneyard Creek, and some residents want to see the open space preserved.

City staff said additional housing is desperately needed in Urbana, with a recent survey finding more than 80% of landlords reporting no vacancies.

The mayor acted as the tie-breaking vote at the meeting, but council must still take a final vote at the June 1 meeting.
