URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — The city of Urbana is accepting applications to fill a vacant city council seat after Councilwoman Chaundra Bishop resigned at the end of April.
Bishop, who represented Urbana's Ward 5, resigned during the April 27 meeting, citing recent health complications.
"Chaundra Bishop has been a dedicated advocate for Ward 5 and a valued member of the Urbana City Council," said Urbana Mayor DeShawn Williams. "Her service to our community has reflected a deep commitment to residents, thoughtful leadership, and a genuine care for the future of Urbana. We are grateful for all she has contributed and wish her the very best."
Per state law, Mayor Williams has up to 60 days from the official resignation date of April 28 to recommend an appointment to the city council to fill Bishop's term until the next general election in 2027. The council must then vote on the appointment within 30 days.
Anyone interested in applying can do so here.Â
Paper applications can also be requested at the City Clerk's Office or the Urbana Free Library.
The deadline for applying is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3.
