CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The new Champaign Unit 4 superintendent addressed major registration issues that popped up ahead of the school year.
Unit 4 said hundreds of students have not started school because their parents or guardians cannot prove they live in the district, and it has requested three residency documents.
Board member Betsy Holder said in a Facebook post Tuesday that an estimated 750 students are being removed from Unit 4 schools because they do not live within the boundary lines.
In a video message posted to YouTube on Wednesday, Unit 4 Superintendent Geovanny Ponce apologized for the long lines and delays in getting students into class.
"We know it can be stressful when there are delays in getting your child into school. Our goal is simple: every student who lives in Unit 4 should be registered in school and learning as quickly as possible," Ponce said.
Parents still struggling with registration are encouraged to call or email the district office directly at 217-351-3800.
