(WAND) - Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued a statement Monday following the Supreme Court's decision on mail-in ballots.Â
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day can still be counted by state election officials if they are postmarked ahead of time.Â
Raoul said that the ruling "confirmed" that state laws are "fully consistent" with federal law.Â
"The right to vote is at the very core of our nation’s democracy, and today’s decision is a win that protects access to the ballot box for millions of Americans. It confirms that all votes cast on time should be counted. While today is a win for democracy, make no mistake: The fight to protect our democracy is not over. I am firmly committed to fighting any effort to undermine our free and fair elections," Raoul said in a press release.Â
