MOUNT ZION, Ill. (WAND) - October is National Women in Business Month. Almost 50% of all businesses in the U.S. are owned by women. Angi Lay, owner of Plume Body Shop, left her corporate job five years ago to start her own business.
"Being the mom, wife and small business owner, there's a lot that goes into just everyday life," Lay said.
Plume sells body essentials such as scented lotions, soaps and skincare products. Beyond all her products being 100% natural, they are all homemade. Prior to being her own boss, Lay worked as a corporate controller for 20 years.
"I was spending a lot of time at work, spending a lot of hours, and I just knew I needed a change. It was a stressful position," Lay said.
As she reflects on the five years in business, she has experienced double-digit growth each year. From starting inside her home, Plume has changed locations due to expansion. Now, the store is located on 144 Wildwood Dr in Mount Zion.
"I think fear pushes you to say, 'I'm not going to fail, I'm going to prove to myself I can do this,'" Lay said.
Lay encourages women to chase their dreams and step out on faith.
"If anyone can run a small business, it is a woman because we multitask," Lay said confidently.
