PAXTON, Ill. (WAND) — Darla Schall has been working to raise awareness and bring more inclusivity to the Down Syndrome community in Paxton. Although there aren't many people living in the Paxton area with Down Syndrome, educating people is Schall's main focus.

"I do feel like the community is becoming more aware of the young people in our community that are living with Down Syndrome, and I think that there is, you know, more of awareness of what their abilities really are," said Schall.

Schall started raising awareness almost two decades ago when her son Brendan was born with Down Syndrome.

"Raising awareness is important so that people understand about what Down Syndrome is and what it isn't, and what they can do and not just what they can't do," explained Schall.

Brendan has graduated high school, and participates in many local events with his family and friends. He says he loves how supportive his family is.

"I love my family because my friends and my family they support me, and I love my mom," said Schall.
