PETERSBURG, Ill. (WAND)- A second Central Illinois musician is performing as a contestant on NBC’s The Voice.
Emily Hough, 16, of Petersburg, Illinois performed a blind audition Monday singing Big Yellow Taxi.
Hough discovered an interest in music at age five after playing with her father’s guitar.
“I started singing when I was seven,” Hough said Tuesday. “I entered my first talent show and one of the judges there … taught guitar. He contacted me and said ‘Hey, you should take guitar lessons.”
In the years since, Hough as performed at school and beyond. Her grandmother suggested she audition for The Voice in Indianapolis.
“On my way there, I was like ‘This is a waste of time. They’re not going to like me,’” Hough remembered.
In a blind audition before the show’s judges, Hough performed Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi.
“I was just ready to go, and when I saw Adam (Levine)’s chair turn, that’s when I was really excited and I was like ‘OK, I made it,’” Hough said. “I just kind of started getting into the song more and just having fun.”
