Man arrested, charged with arson in Sangamon Towers fire that left people injured

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A man has been arrested and charged after being accused of starting a fire at Sangamon Towers that left people injured. 

The Springfield Fire Department was called out to the fire in the 400 block of N. 4th Street Wednesday morning at 7:14. 

Springfield Fire said Joseph Johnson, 62, was arrested after setting a fire on the 10th floor. He faces aggravated arson charges. 

Two people suffered burns. 

SFD said Johnson did not live in the building, but they could not speak to his motive in setting the fire. 

The fire was contained to the 10th floor apartment where it started and brought under control quickly thanks to sprinklers.  

Johnson is charged with two counts of aggravated arson, one count of residential arson, and one count of criminal damage to government supported property.
