SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A man was arrested for an armed carjacking in Springfield Tuesday. 

Springfield Police were called to the 700 block of N. 7th St. at 2:23 a.m. for a report of an armed robbery. 

The victim told officers the suspect had robbed him at gunpoint taking his vehicle, cell phone and wallet.

Officers spotted the stolen vehicle in traffic a short time later and tried to stop the vehicle.

SPD said the vehicle fled from officers and crashed near Park Street and North Grand Avenue. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and tried running away but was caught.

They said a loaded 9mm firearm was recovered during the incident.

The suspect was identified as Daiquaon J. Johnson, 27, of Springfield. Johnson was arrested for aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, armed habitual criminal, armed robbery with a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm-no FOID, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and resisting arrest.

Johnson was transported to the Sangamon County Jail.

On November 13, Johnson was formally charged by the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office with the following offenses: aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, armed habitual criminal and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

He remains in custody at the Sangamon County Jail.
