A still from dashcam video released by Sangamon County from a chase and crash on March 24, 2025.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A 19-year-old man died the day after crashing near the intersection of North 2nd Street and Calhoun Street in Springfield on Monday.

Desmond Walls was in a White Jeep Grand Cherokee with another 19-year-old man who was injured in the crash. Illinois State Police said the Jeep hit a parked car and then two power poles. The Sangamon County Coroner said Walls died Tuesday. Information about the crash and details on Walls' death were first released Thursday.

Police video released from Sangamon County shows a sheriff's deputy attempting to make a traffic stop on the Jeep before the crash. The driver of the Jeep can be seen speeding up in the video and running traffic lights.

A deputy in the video can be heard referencing the vehicle as stolen, but police haven't provided additional details about the attempted pullover.

The sheriff's department said after the aborted traffic stop, the deputy turned his lights off but continued following. He caught up with the crashed Jeep about a minute and a half later.

WAND News reached out to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office for more details, but was referred to ISP.

ISP said the other teenager in the vehicle was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

This is a developing story.
