Man killed in Decatur shooting identified by coroner

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Macon County Coroner is identifying a man who was killed in a Decatur shooting Monday night.

Decatur Police were called to the 800 block of S. Jasper St. for a gunshot victim. Officers found a 65-year-old man, now identified as Darrell D. Coon, Jr., dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers immediately secured the residence to preserve evidence.

Detectives with the Decatur Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division were called in to interview witnesses and process the crime scene.

Multiple shell casings were found near the victim. The Decatur Police Department does not believe this incident to be a random act of violence.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Decatur Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance. An autopsy is underway by the McLean County Coroner.
