DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) —  One person was injured when struck by a train in Decatur on Sunday night.

It happened just after 8 p.m. between the railroad crossing at Edward St. and Main St. 

Police said a 35-year-old man was discovered by emergency personnel with both legs amputated from the incident. Lifesaving efforts, including tourniquet application, were performed, along with removing him from under the train.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he is expected to survive.

The train crossing at Edward St. and Main St. where a 35-year-old man was struck on June 23, 2024. Officials say that railroad personnel saw the man lying on the tracks, but were unable to stop the train in time.

The initial investigation showed that the man was seen by railroad workers lying on the tracks. The workers immediately began emergency stopping procedures but they were unable to stop the train before hitting the man. Workers immediately called 911 and attempted to locate the man after coming to a stop.

This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Decatur Police Department.
