MAROA, Ill. (WAND) - 11 fire departments responded to a massive fire that damaged three buildings just north of Maroa.

Firefighters were called around 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 to Old Route 51 just south of East Lake Fork Road. A firefighter on scene told WAND News the fire was in an abandoned building near the Fourwinds RV facility.

The first alarm fire was quickly upgraded to a third alarm when fire fighters arrived on scene to find the building fully ingulfed.

With the heavy flames two other buildings in the area also suffered fire damage. There were no reported injuries.

All fire units were cleared from the scene just after 9 p.m. on Saturday.

In a statement the Maroa Fire Department thanked the all of the fire departments and other first responders for their help.

People on the WAND Facebook Page reported seeing the smoke for several miles in all directions, including more than 20 miles away in Macon.

By 6 p.m. Saturday most of the flames had been put out and smoke had dissipated. Most of the building appeared destroyed while at least one wall was still partially standing.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.

This is a developing story.
