SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND)- In the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) PLACES report, Sangamon County was highlighted as having several health outcomes that worse worse then comparable Central Illinois counties.
Some of these include asthma, COPD, obesity, and depression, as well as lower insurance rates. One way local healthcare workers are trying to tackle some of these issues is by bringing care directly to people.Â
Molina Healthcare brought their Mobile Health Clinic to Washington Street Mission to help low-income individuals. The clinic offered wellness exams, prenatal and postpartum care, flu vaccines, and blood pressure screenings.Â
"Once you wait so long and let a disease progressed too far, then you're going to see your healthcare costs rise," said Rebecca Kidd, the program manager of mobile healthcare for Molina Healthcare. "The mobile clinic is really helping us get into the community, provide the education, the treatment plan that you need, and get you connected to resources that that extend past the mobile clinics."
Kidd says by bringing care directly to people and reducing burdens to access, the level of care increases.Â
"I think it's just important that we ensure that everyone has equal access to health care so being out here in the community is important and we never turn anybody away," said.Â
While many patients take advantage or screenings, or just getting free advice, one of the biggest requests is vaccinations. Springfield Clinic partnered with Molina to offer flu vaccines just in time for the holidays to kick off.Â
"So especially in congregate living places, there's people that have all sorts of health issues, whether they're asthmatic have other lung issues or cardiac issues," said Michelle Feurer, the Clinic Operations Manager for Drive-Up and Vaccine Management at Springfield Clinic. "So those, these respiratory viruses can really, really, really affect them in a very, very bad way. So this is an easy way is to just get vaccinated."
