cold weather alerts 12-17-24
(WAND) - While we've already experienced a few cold blasts of air, the worst of winter is likely still ahead of us across Central Illinois.  When those bitterly cold temperatures and winds settle in, there will be changes with the alerts to warn you of the cold.

This winter, the National Weather Service will no longer issue advisories, watches, and warnings for "wind chill".  The new alerts focus more on the cold wording since bitter cold can pose a threat to life even with light winds.
cold weather advisory 12-17-24

A "Cold Weather Advisory" replaces the old "Wind Chill Advisory".   This advisory will be issued when it'll feel like -15° or colder across our northern hometowns and at least -10° across our southern hometowns.

An "Extreme Cold Watch" is to alert you it might feel even colder than that for an "Advisory".  As the time frame for this "Watch" nears, it'll likely change to a "Cold Weather Advisory" or be upgraded to an "Extreme Cold Warning".

An "Extreme Cold Warning" means "TAKE ACTION"!  This replaces the "Wind Chill Warning".   You should avoid being outdoors as much as possible and if you're traveling, let someone know your plans — the route you're taking and when you leave and expect to arrive.

When a "Warning" is in effect, it'll feel like -25° or colder north and at least -20° south.
