Rare two-colored lobster caught by fishermen off Cape Cod donated to aquarium

A Cape Cod seafood company has donated a rare two-colored lobster to a science center, sparing the critter from the kettle because of its remarkable coloration. The lobster is the typical brown color on one side and bright orange on the other. The two-toned pattern goes all the way from its head to its tail. Representatives for Wellfleet Shellfish Company in Eastham, Massachusetts, said Monday they have been fielding inquiries about the crustacean for days. The company gifted the lobster to Woods Hole Science Aquarium in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Camera shows Sumatra orangutan using a canopy bridge to cross a road in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Conservations say a Sumatran orangutan has been filmed for the first time using a human-made canopy bridge to cross a public road on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Rapid development has been shrinking the jungle habitat of the critically endangered species. And fatal conflicts with people have been increasing. Conservationists told The Associated Press on Monday about the crossing. They say it marks the first documented case of a Sumatra orangutan using an artificial canopy bridge to cross a public road and connect the separate habitats. The bridge spans the Lagan–Pagindar road in Pakpak Bharat district. The vital corridor connects remote villages that cuts directly through prime orangutan habitat. It splits an estimated 350 orangutans into two isolated forest areas.

Marathon record-breaker says he underwent strict testing regime before smashing 2-hour barrier

LONDON (AP) — Sabastian Sawe hopes the stringent testing regime he underwent before becoming the first person to break the fabled 2-hour barrier in marathon running will prove to the world he is competing clean. The 29-year-old Kenyan pulled off the feat that was long considered unthinkable when winning the London Marathon on Sunday in a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds. There have been a slew of high-profile doping cases involving Kenyan runners in recent years so Sawe knew he would come under suspicion after winning last year’s marathons in Berlin and London. Sawe says he volunteered to undergo “multiple” doping tests in agreement with his coaches and management team. Sawe is urging other runners to do the same.

Sickness, cold killed nearly 30 sloths at a Florida import warehouse in 2024 and 2025

Disease and cold temperatures killed nearly 30 sloths at a Florida import warehouse in 2024 and 2025, according to a state report. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission inspection report from August states that a wildlife facility called Sanctuary World Imports in Orlando ordered 21 sloths from Guyana. They died after overnight temperatures in the warehouse fell to 46 degrees in late December 2024. The business ordered another 10 sloths from Peru. Two sloths were dead when they arrived and the other eight succumbed to what the report called “poor health issues.” Peter Bandre, listed in the report as the business' licensee, told inspectors that the warehouse was not ready to receive sloths during cold weather and that he would be looking for a new veterinarian.

Inside the world’s largest art heist when over $500M of paintings were stolen from a Boston museum

BOSTON (AP) — A former FBI agent is offering the first detailed account of how investigators identified the people believed to have carried out the 1990 Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist. In a new book, Geoffrey Kelly argues the theft was the work of a loose network of Boston-area criminals, not international masterminds, and traces how the stolen art moved through violent criminal circles. His account sheds light on key suspects, investigative missteps and lingering questions, including the actions of a security guard that night. More than three decades later, the paintings remain missing — artworks Kelly calls the “perfect fugitives.”

UK passes bill that will eventually ban cigarette purchases

LONDON (AP) — Parliament has passed a bill to make cigarettes inaccessible to future generations in the U.K. Children born after Dec. 31, 2008, will never be able to buy cigarettes under the new Tobacco and Vapes Bill. The legislation, approved Tuesday, awaits formal approval by King Charles III. It will also regulate tobacco, vaping, and nicotine products. The UK will have one of the toughest antismoking measures globally. Smoking rates have declined since the 1970s, but 13% of the population still smokes. Authorities say smoking causes 80,000 deaths annually in Britain.
