The Puma

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Puma scratched from the Kentucky Derby Saturday morning.

The Puma, trained by Gustavo Delgado Sr. and Gustavo Delgado Jr., would have been ridden by Javier Castellano in the 152nd Run for the Roses.

According to a post on X from a Kentucky Derby spokesperson, the Delgado team found some inflammation in The Puma's leg "due to a skin infection."

"It's incredibly disappointing but the swelling should go down within a day or two. It's just really bad timing," the team said.

The Puma was set to be the Delgados' fourth horse in the Kentucky Derby and their first since winning it with Mage in 2023, ridden by Castellano. The horse is named for Gustavo Sr.'s nickname for his resemblance to popular Venezuelan artist José Luis Rodríguez. They own part of The Puma, along with Ramiro Restrepo and others.
