Decatur, Ill (WAND) – Christmas lights in downtown Decatur have been burning since November 1. On December 4, an additional ornament lit up for the first time.
Teri Hammel with the Convention & Visitors Bureau said having the ornament has made one of her dreams come true. "It was an ornament that we purchased through a business, and I got the idea from Monticello, who has two of them, so I thought, Monticello has two, Decatur can have one."
City workers installed the new ornament on December 4, and it is now lit for the Christmas season.
Hammel said the project couldn't have happened without help, "The city of Decatur put it together. They helped us build it and put it in place."
Union electricians with the IBEW installed the downtown lights in mid-November.
With the ornament up and electricity hooked into it, Hammel said, "That's perfect."
A new large ornament was erected in Central Park in Decatur, Illinois on December 4, 2024.
The large ornament sits in Central Park near E. Prairie Street. Members of the city of Decatur crew assembled and wired it Wednesday. The ornament and lights will be lit every night from now into early January.
