EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - One person is dead in a crash involving a van and a tractor trailer.
Around 1:35 A.M. police say a Dodge Caravan carrying six passengers was traveling Southbound near mile post 167 in Effingham County. The driver was driving at a slow speed due to having a spare tire on the vehicle.Â
A truck tractor semi trailer, driven by Marchelle M. Collins, of Chicago,  was behind the van and struck it, causing heavy damage to the front of the truck tractor and heavy damage to the rear of the Dodge Caravan. The Caravan came to a rest in the median.
The semi driver was uninjured. Injuries in the Caravan include 3 children. An 11 year old, 12 year old, and 57 year old were transported to St. Anthony's Hospital by ambulance. 18 year old Michael Anderson was transported to Carle Hospital in Champaign by ambulance. A 9 year old, and 74 year old, Mary J. Gates, of Calumet City, were air lifted to Carle Hospital.Â
Mary J. Gates was later pronounced dead at Carle Hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
