CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – A crash that caused pigs to end up on the side of the road was started by a deer.
State police say the driver of a white 2001 GMC pickup truck had to slam the brakes when a deer entered the road in front of him. An International truck tractor behind the truck couldn’t avoid hitting the GMC, which then spun to the left shoulder of the road.
Troopers say the truck tractor jackknifed onto the driver’s side of Interstate 74 westbound. Pigs – about three dozen of them, according to The News-Gazette - spilled from the trailer. Law enforcement says the animals were contained to the right ditch.
The GMC driver, identified as 51-year-old Mahomet man Scott Davis, went to a hospital with serious injuries. The truck tractor driver, 36-year-old Trevar C. Fischer from Ferdinand, Ind., was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
After 5 p.m., state police sent a notice saying the highway was back open at mile post 183.
Both men had seat belts on.
