Police: Man punched paramedic in face

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – A man punched a paramedic after responders took him to a hospital, police say.

A sworn statement says Decatur Ambulance Service workers took David Simpson, 52, from a Plover Drive address to Decatur Memorial Hospital on Sunday afternoon. Officers say he complained about “having a stroke, chest pain and intoxication”.

Police say it happened when they arrived at the hospital, as an agitated Simpson ripped his blood pressure cuff off and punched a worker in the face as they wheeled him out of the ambulance. They say Simpson also began hacking saliva to make it seem like he would spit on the DAS worker.

Police report they arrested Simpson when DMH let him go after a “lack of cooperation”. The statement says he resisted arrest and told the officer not to touch him before they eventually put him in the squad car.

Simpson is facing charges of aggravated battery and resisting a peace officer. He is behind bars in Macon County with bond set at $20,000.
