SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Sangamon County Sheriffs Office said they are getting closer to finding a suspect after a 38-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday night. 

The Sangamon County Coroner reports Aaron Cutler of Springfield was pronounced dead by emergency room staff at 6:44 p.m. shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

An autopsy was done on Thursday, and preliminary findings suggest Cutler died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police report just after 6 p.m., deputies were called to a fight in progress in the 300 block of South Paul St. in Springfield. It was reported that during the fight, one man pulled out a handgun and shot the subject he was fighting.

Deputies said they have video evidence that shows the suspect being dropped off by a vehicle a short distance away from the scene shortly before the fight started. 

The vehicle has not yet been located. Deputies said they have a physical description of the suspect, but they have not released that at this time. 

Cutler was shot in the chest. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies located another man in his 50s with a gunshot wound to his back. He was conscious and alert and able to speak. SCSO detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses. 

The death remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner and the Sangamon County Sheriff.
