DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — The city of Danville finished phase one of their revitalization efforts to the community pool. Wednesday afternoon, the city invited community members to a public input session to share their opinions on phase two: revitalizing Garfield Park.
City of Danville staff worked in tandem with the Parks and Recreation department and Farnsworth Group Inc. to develop a plan to renovate the park.
Proposed plans for the renovated Garfield Park in Danville
The current plan calls for new sidewalks, an improved football field, additional parking, a soccer field, more public seating, new greenery, and new playground equipment. Bruce Brown, a landscape architect at the Farnsworth Group, said that they are focusing on adding more interactive playground equipment to be more engaging for children. "I'm the guy that dreams for this." said Brown. "They say ''we want to put in a new park.' Okay, what does the park have? Cause it could be a million things."
Cailee Sanchez, the Grant Manager for the City of Danville said that after getting the community's feedback, they will be able to finish their application for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant. "We have a lot of our plans in place, we know where we want this to head." explained Sanchez. "So with just a little bit of revamping ... especially after hearing the feedback today, just kind of tweaking it to really be geared towards what the community is requesting."
The grant application is due September 15th, and Sanchez said they expect to hear the results in the early spring.
