SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) is determined to protect one of the most important sources of drinking water in east-central Illinois.

The senator refiled a bill on Friday that would ban carbon sequestration over, under or through any sole source aquifer. In 2015, the US Environmental Protection Agency designated a portion of the Mahomet Aquifer system as a sole source aquifer. More than half of the population in east-central Illinois relies on the Mahomet Aquifer system as a source of drinking water.

WAND News spoke to Rose in November after the Illinois Senate paused movement on the bill.

"The point is we shouldn't have any risk," Rose said. "There's no acceptable risk because this is the sole source. There is no other alternate source where you just turn on a switch and you get water from somewhere else. You can't."
