URBANA, Ill. (WAND)- Weather predictions have deemed Friday night and Saturday morning to be risky, with winds gusting as high as 70 miles per hour, and even the potential for some hail.Â
Champaign County EMA Coordinator John Dwyer emphasizes that these winds are serious. If you must travel, prioritize safety.
"Pay attention to weather forecast. And just be aware that the wind could pop up on you. But look ahead and where you're going and what the conditions are," said Dwyer.
With the strong winds we're experiencing, it's important to be cautious as the risk of fire spreading increases.
If you see a downed tree, please take a moment to reach out to your township, village, or public works department to report it. Your prompt action can help ensure the situation is managed effectively.
For downed trees on highways, contacting the Illinois Department of Transportation is the best way to facilitate a safe response.
If you encounter a downed power line, prioritize your safety by keeping your distance and then reporting it as soon as possible. Your vigilance can make a difference in keeping the community safe.
"If the power lines are down, make sure your power company knows. Turn around, find alternative ways of travel,"Â said Dwyer.Â
There is a strong possibility that the gusting winds may cause power outages for residents. Ensure that your phones are fully charged, and have spare power banks and batteries on hand.
Additionally, check in on your neighbors to see if anyone needs assistance.
"Take the time to check on your neighbors, especially if they're elderly of have medical conditions, see if they're doing okay, and just wait for the area to be clear before traveling. And if it looks unsafe, get away from it and report it,"Â said Dwyer.Â
