Shop 'N Save stores could close if buyer not found

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – Shop ‘n Save stores in the Springfield area could close for good if ownership can’t find a new buyer.

The city’s two active Shop ‘n Save stores are owned by Supervalu Inc., a company that owns 36 total stores with the same name. It plans to sell 19 of those locations to Schnucks, while the future of the remaining stores – including both in Springfield – is uncertain.

Supervalu tells WAND-TV it will close both locations, which are located on North Grand Avenue East and Wabash Avenue, if a new buyer isn’t found before 2018 ends. It first began looking for new ownership in April.

Quincy company Niemann Foods Inc. is buying a third Shop ‘n Save in Springfield, located on South Dirksen Parkway.

Should Supervalu fail in finding a buyer, it says it can help employees with severance and other transition help should they stay until the stores close.
