The Champaign Fire Department at Market Place Mall on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025.

The Champaign Fire Department confirmed that a small fire in an HVAC unit was quickly contained around noon, with one firefighter treated for a minor injury.

There was no damage done to the outside of the building.

The department reported that the cause seemed to be accidental and due to a heating element in the ventilation system.

The parent company of Market Place thanked the Champaign Fire Department "for their support and swift response," and confirmed with WAND News that the mall reopened around 2 p.m.

This is a developing story.
