SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Sean Pritchard started his new job with the city of Springfield a few weeks ago. He takes on the role of professional planner for the office of planning and economic development. Most recently, Pritchard worked at the Illinois Department if Commerce and Economic Development for nearly five years.

This is a new position, which means Pritchard has some flexibility to determine what projects he will be involved in. According to Pritchard, his job will focus on primarily economic and business development within the city.

"We've had a lot of different changes here, whether it's the downtown, lots of those businesses moving to the west side, or businesses leaving the east side to go to another area," said Prichard. "I think the city is designed for success, but there's a lot to be done."

Right now, there are several groups, plans, and commissions dedicated to developing Springfield. Part of Pritchard's role will be determining how these projects work together, and where there are gaps in services.

"Springfield is one Springfield, I'm a firm believer of that," said Prichard. "I know we have 10 wards, and every ward needs its own thing, has its own concerns, has its own issues, and that can't be forgotten, either. But we are one Springfield."

Pritchard is still getting adjusted to the role, but hopes to decide his priorities based largely on the concerns of people in Springfield. Overall, he wants to diversify the types of businesses in Springfield, and ensure longevity for current businesses.
