SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Most people prefer to use an ATM instead of waiting in line at the bank. Now, Illinois has DMV kiosks inside 15 grocery stores so people can get renewals at their own convenience.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias shows reporters how to use the Fast Line DMV kiosk inside a Chicago Mariano's on October 17, 2024.
"We all know that the DMV has long been synonymous with headaches not just in Illinois, but throughout the country," said Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. "Since day one, we have been relentlessly driven to improve the overall customer experience by offering Illinoisans more options."
Giannoulias told reporters in Chicago Thursday this pilot program could help people renew their driver's license or vehicle registration stickers in two minutes. The "Fast Lane" kiosks can print registration documents, plate stickers and temporary IDs.
"The kiosks serve as an alternative resource for people who don't have internet access or aren't comfortable with digital services," Giannoulias said. "The kiosk will also provide printed verification of the transaction, which is great for individuals who don't have a printer at home."
The Democrat hopes to have more than 100 kiosks in supermarkets across the state. While customers will still need to go to a DMV for a new driver's license or Real ID, Giannoulias said the vast majority of services can be done quickly at a kiosk or online.
"This is less expensive and more convenient than renewing at most currency exchanges or emission testing sites where many Illinoisans go to renew their vehicle registration," Giannoulias said.
Central Illinois customers can try one of the new DMV kiosks inside the Meijer on the west side of Springfield.
The DMV kiosks will operate whenever the grocery stores are open. That means people could use the machines at night or on the weekends when DMVs are closed.
