Afterschool program funding

A separate plan would ensure the state fully funds afterschool programs with a $50 million investment.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State lawmakers and education leaders are pushing for plans to protect community schools and afterschool programming following significant federal funding cuts.

The Trump administration terminated $18.5 million in grants for full services community schools in December, causing hundreds of staff to be laid off and canceling student support programs.

The ACT Now coalition hopes lawmakers provide $20 million in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget to support community schools. They are also calling for a permanent grant structure separate from federal appropriations.

"If Washington refuses to stand up for our families, we will stand up for ourselves," said Rep. Maura Hirschauer (D-Batavia). "We will fight for our schools. We will fight for our communities, and we will fight for every child and family's right to opportunity."

A separate plan would ensure the state fully funds afterschool programs with a $50 million investment.

Another bill could create a statewide out of school time advisory council to improve coordination, access and long-term sustainability.
