SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois House Democrats proposed a bill in committee that would add a taskforce to find the viability for gun insurance in the state.

The taskforce would be made up of both gun rights advocates and gun violence prevention advocates, to find if the state could save more money if gun insurance was added to Illinois.

"We don't really have an industry in the insurance world for firearm insurance," State Rep. Bob Morgan (D-Highland Park) said. "This is distinct from corporate insurance. This is designed to examine whether this would be individual firearm insurance and what that might look like."

State House Republicans are opposed to the bill, where they said this could negatively limit Illinoisans' Second Amendment rights.

"I have historically opposed taskforces generally just because we talk and talk and talk and nothing ever happens," State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) said. "On this one I hope we talk and talk and talk and nothing ever happens because you're putting on additional burden on a constitutionally guaranteed right."

The proposal is still in committee, where lawmakers could vote on it later in session.
