SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bipartisan plan on Gov. JB Pritzker's desk could allow sexual assault survivors to use vouchers to pay for taxi or rideshare services like Uber and Lyft.

Illinois currently requires treatment hospitals to provide vouchers for an ambulance, forensic, lab and follow-up healthcare services for survivors.

Senate Bill 1274 would allow people to use the voucher for transportation to and from hospitals or other treatment centers.

"The bill does not require any additional funding," said Rep. Martha Deuter (D-Westmont). "Senate Bill 1274 passed the Senate unanimously and is supported by the Illinois Hospital Association."

The proposal gained unanimous support in both chambers this spring.

Illinois could implement the new voucher system on Jan. 1 if Pritzker signs the bill into law.
