SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Gov. JB Pritzker sat down for a fireside chat at the Economic Club of Chicago Tuesday. The Democrat said he wants lawmakers to address immigration enforcement and transportation during the second week of the veto session.

Ways to help Chicago and the surrounding suburbs are some of the top items on the veto session to-do list, but Pritzker said his job is to represent and support the economy of every community.

"I know that a lot of people who live here in Chicago don't often think about Central Illinois or Southern Illinois, but they are vital to the future and success of our state," Pritzker said.

Democrats hope to limit ICE agents from detaining people in courthouses and expand the definition of law enforcement prohibited from working with immigration officials. They could also discuss banning law enforcement from wearing masks or neck gaiters on the job.

"We don't want a country where you've got people getting stopped and asked for their proof of citizenship because of the color of their skin," Pritzker said.

Transit reform and funding will be a major focus of the final three days of the session. Pritzker explained that Illinois has to make investments to improve transit for the Chicagoland area and the rest of the state.

"There are transportation systems all across the state of Illinois that need to be upgraded, and that should be part of this," Pritzker said. "I have insisted upon that from the very beginning, and it will be."

The governor also cleared up rumors that the state would help the Chicago Bears fund a new stadium in Arlington Heights. Pritzker stressed taxpayers should not be left on the hook for debt that came with building Soldier Field.

"We should help private businesses and public businesses grow in the state of Illinois," Pritzker said. "What I'm not for is that we're responsible for building your factory or we're responsible for building you're new headquarters. We're not."

Pritzker also said he does not want to redraw the state's political maps, even though House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries would like Illinois to gain another Democratic seat in Congress.
