SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois House Democrats approved a resolution Wednesday condemning political violence.Â
Leader Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero) said political violence has impacted Democrats and Republicans across the country, as former Minnesota Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed just months before Charlie Kirk's assassination.
However, the Illinois Democratic Party Chair told her colleagues that lawmakers must also condemn political violence committed by ICE agents and other federal officials invading the state.
"If you're choosing to draw a distinction between individual acts of violence and institutional acts of violence simply because one is condoned by Donald Trump, then I am here to say those beliefs are part of the problem," Hernandez said.
House Republicans spoke in strong opposition to the resolution and its sponsors, criticizing the Trump administration.Â
Rep. Adam Niemerg said the president has stepped up to get criminals off the streets of Chicago and the suburbs.
"These are the folks that Gov. Pritzker and Mayor Johnson are trying to protect," Niemerg said. "These individuals can go in any building in the city of Chicago and be harbored as criminal illegals when we, the Republicans, are trying to protect the citizens of your great city."
House Resolution 508 was adopted on a partisan 74-34 vote.
