SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois is honoring the legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson with a new law expanding youth civic engagement.

Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill Friday to ensure all high schools offer students of voting age the opportunity to register during the school day in a safe, accessible and nonpartisan environment.

Sponsors said the law can help even more young people be prepared to vote.

"The reverend cared deeply about making sure young people had both a diploma and a voter registration card," said Sen. Robert Peters (D-Chicago). "I am just grateful and honored to carry a bill dedicated to the reverend and his legacy."

Republicans said the Illinois State Board of Elections already provides voter registration information to schools.

The new law took effect immediately.

"It sends a message to every graduating senior in Illinois that you're not just prepared to leave school, you're prepared to participate, lead and shape the future of this state," said Rep. Kimberly Du Buclet (D-Chicago).
