SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A plan heading to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk could expand youth civic engagement in honor of Rev. Jesse Jackson.
The bill would ensure all high schools offer students of voting age the opportunity to register during the school day in a safe, accessible and nonpartisan environment.Â
Sponsors said this plan can help even more young people be prepared to vote.
"The reverend cared deeply about making sure young people had both a diploma and a voter registration card," said Sen. Robert Peters (D-Chicago). "I am just grateful and honored to carry a bill dedicated to the reverend and his legacy."
Yet, Senate Republicans argued the State Board of Elections already provides voter registration information to schools. Sen. Jil Tracy (R-Quincy) said this plan would only duplicate current state law.
House Bill 4339 passed out of the Senate on a 41-12 vote Friday. The proposal previously received a 77-24 vote in the House.
"It sends a message to every graduating senior in Illinois that you're not just prepared to leave school, you're prepared to participate, lead and shape the future of this state," said Rep. Kimberly Du Buclet (D-Chicago).
