SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Lobbying group Illinois Right to Life traveled to Springfield Tuesday with a thousand strong cohort where they condemned Illinois pro-abortion laws and lawmakers.
State Rep. Adam Niemerg (R-Teutopolis) alongside other GOP lawmakers at the Right to Life rally Tuesday.
The group held a rally in front of the state capitol with young and old holding signs. Some Catholic schools came with a marching band, performing songs and dancing while shouting "pro life."
GOP lawmakers left the House floor mid-session to meet the rally members. They stood behind State Rep. Adam Niemerg (R-Teutopolis) where at the podium he criticized Democrat lawmakers, demanded a new Governor and talked about a Danville reproductive health clinic.
"But just recently the planned parenthood announced they have abandoned that abortion clinic in Danville," Niemerg said. "What we do matters."
In 2023, the potential Danville abortion clinic was rammed by a truck full of gasoline. The man who rammed the clinic was convicted last year for five years in prison.
A couple of counter protestors with a megaphone stood at the back of the rally, where they said abortion was a human right.Â
Some rally goers close to the counter protestors sung gospel songs in an attempt to drown out the megaphone. Niemerg personally called out the pro abortion group.
"I'm talking to the folks back there that are going bombastic and so full of hate and evil won't like what I have to say next, but you guys [Right to Life] are winning," Niemerg said.
While there was a sizeable protest, any bills going against State Democrat abortion laws are unlikely to pass. This is because at the state level, Illinois Democrats have a super majority in both chambers and hold the Governors seat.
