Structures providing habitat for fish in Lake Decatur

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - ADM, IDNR and Living Lands and Waters have been working to put together permanent structures in Lake Decatur.

So far, fifty "Georgia Cubes" have been placed in the lake.  These permanent structures are nearly snag proof and are designed to provide habitat for fish to relate to and provide cover for young fish.

The design and materials used have been proven successful in other lakes including Lake Shelbyville. Trees and other "natural" materials may provide temporary shelter and structure for fish but will degrade over time and snag many baits and hooks which provide other hazards over time.

The maps have specific GPS coordinates for each strip of cubes. They have been placed with bank fishermen in mind but are also identifiable with sonar.

It may take some time for fish to really relate to these structures. Hopefully, by next year, they will be  holding fish.
