TEUTOPOLIS, Ill. (WAND) - Sunday marked one year since a devastating tragedy in Teutopolis.

On September 29, 2023, people had to rush out at a moment's notice after anhydrous ammonia leaked from a tanker truck after it crashed just outside of city.

Five people, including two children, died in the aftermath.

The leak started after the tanker swerved off the road to avoid a car illegally passing in a no passing zone. The resulting crash punctured the tank and sprung a leak.

Emergency officials then evacuated the town for more than a day.
